Classes and Trainers
You can take dog training from any facility. Over 80% of the dogs in our program have received at minimum their therapy dog class through Jackie’s Basics and Beyond in Cary.
Several of the trainers have therapy dogs in our organization so they know exactly what we are looking for. They teach the skills needed to pass the exam and be successful in your visits.
It is never too early to start training. Here are the very basics to start your dog on the path to success even as they are a puppy.
Be able to walk on leash on both left and right side. Testing will be on the right side as this is important for making visits in places with hallways
Teach your dog that everything that falls on the floor is a leave it. This could one day save their life should there be something dangerous on the floor or ground at a visit.
Get them used to loud noises both indoor and outside
Even though kisses are adorable to some licking is a strong NO. Possibility of licking germs or toxic medicine could be fatal.
Do not “greet on leash” This means to not let your dog go nose to nose on a leash with another dog on a leash. Should there be an incident it could cause your dog to be reactive or fearful of other dogs on leash going forward. Do not let them sniff other dogs while on leash. In the exam we have over a dozen dogs lined up within 3 feet apart from each other and they will have to ignore each other.
