WHAT IS MRSA?
-
MRSA is an antibiotic resistant infection caused by Staph Bacteria. MRSA is usually transmitted through contact of an infected patient or carrier.
-
Therapy Dog visits can result in transmission of MRSA infections if an infected patient is in contact with the therapy dog.
HOW CAN IT BE PREVENTED?
-
Risk of transmission can be reduced with the use of hand sanitizer or hand washing before and after physical contact with a therapy dog.
-
Studies have also shown that wiping dogs with Chlorhexidine wipes every 5-10 minutes during a visit can reduce the risk of dogs transmitting MRSA
